Exciting blog enhancements!

>> Monday, October 24, 2011

I was inspired to make a few enhancements around here, so that's what I've been doing these past couple of days. If you haven't noticed yet, here are the latest additions to the blog.

What's New!

Email subscription
I'm so excited about this, and I can't wait for the email updates to have a life of their own. Do expect slight changes at first since I will be experimenting with it. But aside from sending blog posts directly to your inboxes, I'm really looking forward to some fun, exciting and perhaps more personal content exclusively for email subscribers.

All you have to do is click on the link on the right side of this page. It will load a new page where you will enter your e-mail address and verification code. You will then receive an e-mail I have prewritten asking to confirm your subscription. And, that's it! You can also reply to each update sent to your inbox, and I will receive them directly in mine. Your messages are most welcome.

Subsribe options
Besides clicking on the RSS and email subscription links on the right, you can now also subscribe to the blog from a dedicated Subscribe page. This makes subscribing less of a hassle to some people. There are readers who are not too familiar with blog layouts or subscriptions per se, and I hope this will make it easier. Now, you won't get lost!

Blog policy
Another new page is Policy, where I clearly state how I go about blogging. It's not to discourage any kind of interaction. I just feel that it is important to have this written out in the blog to save all parties from awkward email exchanges.

Like, +1 and Tweet
I decided to put the Facebook Like, Google Plus +1 and Tweet this buttons on top of each post to be more visible and accessible, and also because they look so out of place with the rest of the social media buttons below. But because I'm still not 100% convinced of this placement, I may still change it. These are the buttons you'd want to click on to like, +1 and tweet a particular blog post.

Social media buttons
I had social media buttons in the footer, but they were so obscure and inconspicuous that I feel they were almost useless to readers, and so I switched to social media buttons from AddThis. They can be customizable and are prettier. You can now easily e-mail the article, or share it on Facebook, Tumblr and Twitter!
Tip: click on the last (+) button for more sharing options.

I especially like that it includes a Print button. I know we have to save the forests and cut down on paper consumption, but sometimes I just like to read and write on paper. Maybe there is at least one other person out there who feels the same way?

(Update: The Twitter button can no longer be found at the bottom of the post since there is already a Tweet this button on top.)

www.GluttononaBudget.com
And the biggest development, which has been a long time coming, is the new domain name! C helped me out with this. From now on gluttononabudget.blogspot.com redirects to www.gluttononabudget.com.

Don't worry, your existing links will not be broken. But if you can update them, which would be so great of you, it will be a piece of cake. If you don't want to bother, you don't have to 'coz they'll still work.

Although RSS subscriptions will be intact, I expect a drop in the number of visitors at first since the URL will be new to search engines, but it'll be all worth it. Good times ahead!

Aww. My baby is growing up.
