FlapJacks, UP-Ayala Technohub

Friends from FlapJacks sent over a gift voucher in line with their Back...Better...Best campaign, so C and I marched to UP-Ayala Technohub to try some of the classics they brought back to their menu.

Dennis, our very eager server, introduced the four dishes under the Back...Better...Best campaign. He said these dishes had been unavailable for months but are offered again because of insistent public demand, so to speak.

C and I were able to try three out of the four "blockbuster favorites". We immediately made up our minds about getting the Lemon Pepper Pan Seared White Fish (Php 295) and The Original Hashbrown Burger (Php 350). We almost didn't order Mango Exotica, which I keep on mistaking for Mango Erotica(!), but it seemed real good on paper and Dennis said it's one of the best-sellers. We're a bit gullible.

Mango Exotica is available in two serving sizes: Lunch (solo) at Php 195; and Dinner (2-3 persons). Since I'm not gung-ho about vegetables, we naturally opted for the smaller version.

At first bite, I can't believe we almost didn't order it. The salad was really good! Even C raved about it as soon as he put some in his mouth. The greatest things about it are the toasted bread (I'd like to get some to snack on) and the dressing, which was evenly distributed. The salad must have been tossed well. We were told that we can ask for more dressing but we didn't have to. If we were to add more, the dressing would've overpowered everything else. It's perfect as it is.

Not soon after, the other two dishes arrived. I attacked the fish right away because I'm a rice person. The fish was cooked just right, neither dry nor rubbery. It's also flavored well, and, surprisingly, so was the rice. The vegetables were crunchy as well. What I liked most about this dish is the fact that everything's flavorful but nothing was too salty. It had the right balance of flavors. I didn't get tired of it. That's why after C prodded me that it was time to switch plates, I still sneaked a mouthful or two.

The Original Hashbrown Burger was not to be ignored, of course. While C was handling or mishandling it, he made me take a bite of the meat, which he said tasted great. He was right. The meat was mightily meaty. Just how we like it. Although it seemed overwhelming at first because of the hashbrown, there was something in the appeal of it all that pulled us in. All the elements turned out to be a perfect match from the hashbrown to the yummy bun. I'd love to bring home some buns. But because the burger was huge, it was difficult to take a bite of, so we had to knife our way through it.

We rested for a while before ordering more. We cannot not try out the pancakes and waffles, so we did. We had Banana Pecan Fancy Pancakes (Php 185). It looked so pretty! And I was so thrilled that there were actual slices of banana on top. There was something a bit curious about the syrup but it didn't ruin my pancake-at-night experience.

In addition to the pancakes, we had Homemade Waffles (Php 155). We decided to get the original variant without any fancy flavors, and simple as it was, I enjoyed how I can taste the flavor of the dough. What makes waffles interesting is their texture. They're your pancake with an edge.

We weren't able to finish our breakfast-turned-dessert because we were too full already. In an attempt to burn what we ate earlier, we each got Endless Coffee (Php 75), but I wasn't too happy with the flavor. C was fine with it, but I like my coffee fuller and less nutty.

We plan to go back on a lazy morning or afternoon to dine and burn hours. The place seemed to be a perfect spot for chatting with a friend or even doing some homework. And you know what else? They got free WiFi! Just ask for the password from the staff.

You know what's even better? You can get a chance to try out their dishes yourself! To find out how, stay tuned for an upcoming post. For now, here's the press release from FlapJacks:
